Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the option to question certain rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
